‘Les Améthystes: wines by artisan winemakers’
In partnership with producers who respect our values, ‘Les Améthystes’ is a range of authentic wines.
Why Amethysts ?
Purple has long been associated with royalty. The Greek word ‘Amethystos’ can be literally translated as ‘not drunk’. The Amethyst was considered to be a powerful antidote for drunkenness. Even today, this stone is a symbol of sobriety.
The colour of an amethyst, just like wine, can vary from pale lilac to deep purple.
Here is the Greek legend which tells of the origin of the amethyst :
Dionysus, the god of wine, was angered one day by an insult from a mortal man. He swore to take revenge on the next mortal who crossed his path. For this he created ferocious tigers that would do his will. But suddenly the innocent Amethyst arrived, a beautiful young girl on her way to give thanks to the goddess Diana. Diana changed her into a pure quartz statue to protect her from the tigers’ claws. When Dionysus saw this magnificent statue, he shed tears of wine with remorse for his actions. His tears coloured the quartz and created the gemstone that we know today.
